General

  1. The IUI is located within a marine nature reserve. Please follow the rules of nature conservation and avoid activities which may harm the fauna and flora. Do not collect protected items from the sea and the beach without a permit from the Israel Natural Parks Authority. Entry and exit from the sea are permitted only in the designated paths with marked buoys (the one linked to the IUI pier and the other about 40 meters north).

  2. Paths and work places may have sharp objects and fragile glassware may break in laboratories, spilling chemical residues and spreading sharp pieces of broken glass. Therefore, please avoid walking barefoot in any area of the institute (excluding the dive center and dormitories).

  3. In order to avoid light “contamination", the institute uses dim or red light at places visible to the sea. Please walk carefully and slowly during dark.

  4. Students arriving with cars are asked to park outside the Institute, along the road parallel to the fence.

  5. Please help conserve energy and water; turn off air conditioners and lights when leaving rooms, the lecture hall and the laboratories and minimize the use of fresh water (which originates from an energy-consuming desalination plant).

  6. On exit from the sea, rinse all dive equipment in fresh water, leave it to dry in the shade and then store it in a storage box you will receive.

Teaching Building

  1. Eating and drinking are restricted to the kitchenette and terrace, east of the teaching building. You can bring hot drinks and refreshments into the lecture room, but no eating or drinking is allowed in the laboratories and computer room.

  2. Do not enter the teaching building when wet or with wet, dripping gear.

  3. For your protection, a lab coat, full shoes and safety glasses must be worn when working with chemicals and laboratory equipment.

  4. Follow the guidelines for working with chemical and biological waste. Do not mix liquid waste with solid waste, use separate containers.

  5. Do not turn off hoods.

  6. If you put a jar or container with a chemical or seawater sample in the chemical hood or in the refrigerator, it must be clearly marked with your name, the name of course, name of content and date of storage.

  7. Please keep the optical equipment (binoculars, microscopes), computers and analytical instrumentation in laboratories clean and dry. If seawater is spilt over equipment, absorb the seawater immediately with paper towels or cloth soaked in fresh water, and then dry with tissue paper.

  8. In order to prevent dust, keep equipment, including microscopes, binoculars and computers covered with dust cover when not in use.

  9. Please promptly report to the Teaching Coordinator (Tel: 162), or to the Teaching Secretariat (Tel: 197) on any problem you found with the teaching facilities or on any malfunctioning gear.

  10. For your convenience, there is a modest kitchenette in the teaching building. Please keep it clean and make sure to keep the urn filled with water.

IUI Dorms

  1. Maintain cleanliness and order in the dorm rooms. Empty trash bins into the large garbage container located in the yard of the Institute (near the fence north of the dorm). Trash bags are kept in dorm kitchens.

  2. Please deposit plastic bottles, glass bottles and packing material in the appropriate recycling bin, located just north of the dorms.

  3. Please keep away from stray animals and do not let them entering in the rooms.

  4. Please use furniture and beddings covers in your room only; do not take it out of the rooms.

  5. Drying lines for wet dive gear are located on the dormitory courtyard on the side facing the sea.

  6. Take out any food from the refrigerators on day of departure.

  7. Promptly report any fault or problem with the dorms to the teaching aide or directly to the Teaching Coordinator or Secretariat.
