Chemical Safety Procedures and Waste Disposal

  1. Responsibility for Chemical Waste Processing

    • The responsibility for handling chemical waste and procuring the necessary equipment (waste containers, neutralizing agents, etc.) lies with the user.

  2. Separation of Chemical Waste

    • Chemical waste must be separated according to its chemical properties (organic liquids, inorganic liquids, contaminated laboratory equipment, solids). If assistance is needed, contact the safety coordinator.

  3. Chemical Storage Conditions

    • The IUI chemical storage room is not climate-controlled. Summer temperatures can exceed 50°C. Chemicals sensitive to heat should not be stored in the chemical storage room! Always check the safety data sheet (MSDS) for each chemical to determine the optimal storage conditions.

  4. Storage of Hazardous/Flammable/Toxic Chemicals

    • Hazardous, flammable, and toxic chemicals must be stored exclusively in a chemical fume hood, a ventilated chemical cabinet, or the chemical storage room.

  5. Pre-planning for Waste Disposal and Storage

    • Plan your chemical waste storage and disposal needs before starting any work.

In Case of Chemical Spill

  1. Notification

    • Notify the floor residents and prevent anyone from approaching the spill area.

  2. Containment of Spill Area

    • Isolate the spill area by closing doors or placing appropriate signs to warn others.

  3. Safety Coordinator Notification

    • Notify the safety coordinator (Gil Koplovitz – 058-4997171) and the safety supervisor (Eli Kinan – 054-8820171).

  4. Emergency Services Notification

    • If necessary, contact the fire department (102) and medical emergency services (101).

  5. Priority Action – Treat the Injured

    • First priority: remove injured persons to fresh air and wash them with water in the emergency showers and eye wash stations.

  6. Handling the Chemical Spill

    • If you are familiar with the spilled chemical, call an experienced colleague for help and follow the instructions: a. Wear full personal protective equipment (PPE) from the chemical spill equipment cabinet. b. Use a gas mask with a filter, chemical-resistant gloves, a protective suit, and shoe covers. c. Absorb the spill using designated absorbent pads. d. Dispose of used absorbent pads and PPE in a trash bag, seal it tightly, and label it accordingly.
