The IUI offers a range of public laboratories designed to support research and teaching in the marine sciences.

These laboratories include both wet and dry lab facilities, equipped with advanced instrumentation, seawater tanks with flow systems, a diving center, research vessels, and a well-stocked library. These resources are available to researchers, students, and participants of courses held at the institute.

The public labs serve a wide range of research fields, including:
Ecology, chemical, physical and biological oceanography, invertebrate and vertebrate biology, neurobiology, molecular biology, and toxicology.

General Public Laboratory

Our public lab is open to all and fully equipped with a wide range of modern instruments. It is ideal for researchers and students needing short-term lab access (from several hours to a few days).

Equipment Available in the General Public Lab:
  • Eppendorf −80°C freezer (for short-term sample storage)

  • −20°C freezer

  • Refrigerator

  • Ice machine

  • Drying oven

  • Refrigerated ultra-centrifuge – Sorvall RC 6 Plus

  • Refrigerated centrifuge – Hermle X327K

  • Mini centrifuge – Eppendorf miniSpin

  • 2 stereo microscopes – Nikon SMZ800N

  • 2 compound microscopes – Nikon Eclipse Ei

  • Microscope/stereo camera – Nikon Ds-Fi3

  • Imaging software – NIS Elements BR

  • Stereo microscope – Leica Wild M3Z

  • Fiber optic illumination – Nikon C-FLED2

  • Analytical balance – Precisa 520PB

  • Non-analytical balance – Precisa BJ 1000C

  • Fume hood for work with hazardous chemicals

Radioisotope Laboratory

A dedicated radioisotope lab is available at the institute, operating under the approval of the Israeli Ministry of Environmental Protection and following the Hebrew University safety guidelines.

Equipment in the Radioisotope Lab:
  • Seawater filtration system for 12 samples of 15 or 50 mL – Millipore 1225 Sampling Manifold

  • Liquid scintillation analyzer (LSA) – PerkinElmer Tri-Carb 2910 TR

  • Chemical fume hood

  • Laminar flow hood

Teaching Laboratory

The primary purpose of the Teaching Laboratory is to serve students enrolled in the courses held at the institute.
However, since the labs are located in the teaching building and equipped with a wide range of scientific instruments, they may also be used – upon prior arrangement – for conducting scientific research. Likewise, scientific equipment belonging to the teaching department may be borrowed, provided it is not required for ongoing coursework, subject to prior approval.

Equipment Available in the Teaching Lab:

The lab is equipped with a broad selection of instruments and tools, organized by field of use:

Molecular Biology & Biochemistry
DNA and protein electrophoresis systems, including gel running units, mini-gel systems, gel casting units, glass plates, and blotting modules.Electroporation device (Micro-Pulser).
Microscopy & Imaging
Stereo and compound microscopes, microscope cameras, microsensors and probes (oxygen, pH), and specialized illumination systems.
Temperature Control & Incubation
Multiple types of incubators (standard, shaker, hybridization), heat and cooling baths of different volumes, shaking water baths, dry block heaters, and drying ovens.
Environmental Measurement Equipment
HOBO temperature/light data loggers, oxygen microptodes, and additional sensor systems.
General Laboratory Equipment
Autoclave for sterilization, various vortex mixers, overhead stirrers and homogenizers, analytical and non-analytical balances, heating and drying ovens,
   and supplementary refrigeration units.
Field & Marine Equipment
Underwater cameras and sampling gear for field and marine research.
