International conference marking the end of “Schulich Project in Marine Sciences” (2014-2017)
An international conference was held this week at the institute marking the end of the “Schulich Project in Marine Sciences” (2014-2017).
The Project was funded through a donation of 2 million Dollars by the philanthropist Seymour Schulich (Toronto, Canada) and was based on cooperation in research and teaching between researchers from Dalhousie University (Halifax, Canada) and the Interuniversity Institute in Eilat.
As part of the research program, 8 projects were carried out in various fields, including marine ecology, dynamics of floods and their geological effects on the Gulf of Eilat-Aqaba, biology of plankton and coral reef, acoustic tracking of fish, and aquaculture. The program also included 8 joint courses, four in Canada and four in Eilat, in which Israeli and Canadian undergraduate students participated. In total about 50 researchers and 100 students participated in the program’s research and teaching activities. The conference concluded with a discussion on possibilities to raise funds to allow this unique and outstanding program to continue.
